Paragraph about the ensemble:
The Newberry Consort is “one of America’s most innovative and accomplished early music ensembles” (Fanfare). It has the artistic goal of bringing important but unknown music from the 13th through 18th centuries to life for today’s audiences, utilizing the renowned collections of the Newberry Library. Now in its 23rd season, the Consort is lauded for “sheer musical intelligence” (Gramophone), offering audiences a rich blend of music, history, literature, and education. Director Emerita Mary Springfels was charged for twenty years with uncovering music and topics of interest housed in the Newberry Library; presenting concerts “invested with impeccable taste and style” that “honed the practice of conceptual programming to a fine art” (Chicago Tribune). Upon her retirement in 2007, David Douglass, a founding member and internationally renowned violinist, succeeded her as Director and renewed this mission. Through their concert series, internationally distributed recordings, broadcasts, and touring appearances, the Newberry Consort indeed earns the distinction, “the premiere early music ensemble” (Santa Barbara News Press).
