The ground bass, a repeated harmonic pattern, forms the basis of some of the most memorable music from the 17th century. English consorts, Italian dances, Spanish divisions and Scots tunes all relied on grounds as a common currency. In a program that showcases this beloved genre, Seven Times Salt explores the many guises of the ground bass from “Greensleeves” to “La Follia” and beyond.
This program, originally premiered as a collaboration with violinist David Douglass, features music by Purcell, Matteis, Uccellini, Rossi, Zanetti, and others. We include choice selections from The Division Violin, The English Dancing Master, and original compositions by David Douglass.
