Seven Times Salt explores the music of English composers who made their mark in other countries, and the Continenental composers they inspired. For some, their exile was purely a professional consideration, and for others, a way to avoid religious discrimination or even the long arm of the law! These expatriates informed a whole generation of Continental composers, sharing their particularly English sense of melancholy and leaving behind the quintessential English pavan. Some eventually gained recognition in their native land; others found better fortune abroad. This program features consorts, dances and vocal works by Dowland, Hume, Brade, Scheidt, Simpson, Phillips, and Bull, and our original settings of anonymous ballads.
