Vox Vocal Ensemble Gotham City Orchestra George Steel, conductor

Presented in association with Park Avenue Armory A devout member of the Orthodox Church, Stravinsky wrote religious music that exudes a commanding spirituality. In the extraordinary vastness of Park Avenue Armory, the Vox Vocal Ensemble and the Gotham City Orchestra, under the direction of George Steel, will offer four brilliant masterpieces. The program juxtaposes Stravinsky’s early sacred tour-de-force Symphony of Psalms with the astringent beauty of his final major work, Requiem Canticles. No other composer in the twentieth century wrote in such a multiplicity of styles as Igor Stravinsky (1882-1971). From neo-classicism to serialism, ballet to chamber works, Stravinsky’s musical genius was wide-ranging. Miller Theatre at Columbia University explores this epic composer’s astonishing variety in this Festival featuring over 45 works drawn from his chamber music, songs, choral compositions, and orchestral music.
