Choir of St. Luke in the Fields
Pre-concert lecture: Dr. Antoni Pizà
The holiday concert will feature the Thomas Tallis’s magnificent seven-part “Mass for Christmas Day,” based on the plainsong Puer natus est (‘A boy is born’), almost certainly composed during the reign of Queen Mary Tudor (1553-1558), the brief period that marked the last years of Catholic monarchy in England and the pinnacle of English Renaissance polyphony. The program will include motets for the Christmas season by Tallis, William Byrd, and John Sheppard, along with carols from the period. The concert will be followed by a festive reception.
