Music from the Hofkapelle of Maximilian II

Missa Ego flos Campi a 6  - Jacob Vaet

Motets by Vaet and Clemens non Papa

Pre-concert lecture 7 PM  - Dr. Sarah Davies

Jacob Vaet, one of the best unknown composers of the 16th-century, has been unjustly neglected both by being overshadowed by his more famous best friend Orlande de Lassus, and his tragically short life. He died at about age 37. In spite of his relatively short career he managed to produce a respectable body of work, almost exclusively for his patron Maximilian II. He possessed a singular talent for composing state motets for coronations and other Imperial occasions where grand and glorious music was required.  Stylistically Vaet’s most important influences were Nicolas Gombert and his teacher Clemens non Papa. He favors rich and deeply hued musical textures liberally seasoned with dissonances, pervasive imitation, and a special affection for low voices.
