Personal Summary / Bio

James Hampson is currently pursuing his Doctorate in Historical Performance at Boston University as the first natural horn player to enter the program. He is currently studying with Douglas Lundeen, one of the pioneers of historical horns and the cantabile school in the United States. Mr. Hampson is an active freelancer in the Northeast, performing with a variety of ensembles including The Handel and Haydn Society, Grand Harmonie, the Clarion Music Society, Julliard415 and with period ensembles at MIT, Harvard University and Brown University. He has also performed with the Mercury Orchestra in Houston, Texas and is a Visiting Artist/Teacher at the University of Washington, instructing students in historical instruments and styles and performing historic horns with the University Orchestra under the direction of David Rahbee and Stephen Stubbs. Mr. Hampson has been recorded with The Handel and Haydn Society in the live recording of their Haydn in Paris concert and with the Clarion Music Society in Judas Maccabaeus. He received his Master’s degree in Modern Horn Performance from Rutgers University studying with Douglas Lundeen and Bachelor’s degrees in Music and Mathematics from SUNY Fredonia studying with Marc Guy.
