Personal Summary / Bio

st1\:*{behavior:url(#ieooui) } Sarah Holland began studying piano and organ with Shirley Cortelyou in her hometown of Bushnell, Illinois. By the age of nine, Holland had succeeded Cortelyou’s position as organist at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church. In addition to playing for Sunday masses, Holland studied classical piano with Rosa Drake Julstrom, graduate of the Eastman School of Music, and wife of the late composer/violinist, Clifford Julstrom. During high school, Holland completed level nine of the Illinois State Music Teachers Association’s Achievement in Music Program. After graduating from Bushnell-Prairie City High School in May of 2005, Holland received a scholarship from the Bushnell Arts Foundation, as well as a Presidential Scholarship, CUNA Mutual Scholarship, and Lois J. Steffen Memorial Organ Scholarship from the Lawrence University Conservatory of Music in Appleton, Wisconsin. Holland collaborated with the Lawrence Symphony Orchestra and the Lawrence University Choirs. Solo performances included department recitals and masterclasses with Jon Laukvik and David Heller. Holland also served an internship with Wahl Organbuilders. In July of 2006, Holland attended the Mount Royal Conservatory Organ Academy in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, for advanced study with Neil Cockburn, David Higgs, Rachel Laurin, and Simon Preston. In June of 2007, Holland studied with Jon Gillock and Yuko Hayashi at the Boston Organ Academy. In July of 2007, Holland traveled to Montreal to study with James David Christie, John Grew, Carole Terry, and Marie-Claire Alain at the McGill Summer Organ Academy. After two years at Lawrence, Holland transferred to the Western Illinois University School of Music in Macomb, Illinois, to study with Dr. Anita Eggert Werling. She received a scholarship from the First Christian Church to do so. Holland performed for the WIU chapter of the American Guild of Organists, of which she is an active member. Holland is also a member of the Organ Historical Society, Early Music America, Music Teachers National Association, Phi Kappa Phi, Blue Key Honor Society, and Golden Key Honor Society. Additionally, Sarah was named to the Dean's List of scholars in music and the 2008-2009 Who’s Who Among Students in American Colleges and Universities. She served as substitute organist for the First Baptist, Wesley United Methodist, Scotland Trinity Presbyterian, and St. George Episcopalian churches of Macomb, Illinois; First Congregational United Church of Christ in Topeka, Kansas; Colonial Congregational United Church of Christ in Prairie Village, Kansas; the St. Lawrence Catholic Campus Center in Lawrence, Kansas; and Northminster Presbyterian Church of Kansas City, Missouri. Furthermore, Holland held positions at the Jerusalem Methodist Church of Bushnell, Illinois; St. Augustine Catholic Church of St. Augustine, Illinois; and the Methodist Church of Good Hope, Illinois. Sarah received a Bachelor of Music degree in organ performance from WIU in May of 2009. In July and August of 2009, Holland traveled to Northern Germany as a member of Kansas University’s organ study tour. In August 2009, Holland began studies for a Master of Music degree in organ performance at WIU. Holland has been fortunate enough to receive additional funding from the Bushnell Arts Foundation for this degree. Throughout the course of her Masters study, Holland taught through WIU’s Community Music School. In August 2011, Holland will begin studies for a Doctor of Musical Arts degree at the University of Kansas.
