Personal Summary / Bio
I am currently in formation in the Benedictine monastic vocation at Mount Angel Abbey in Saint Benedict, Oregon. Before beginning formation at the abbey, I sold most of my instruments, but kept a douçaine (made by Phil Neuman of Oregon City), which I play at the abbey. The douçaine was the focus of my graduate research and performance. My thesis, titled Douçaine Vivant: The Life, Death and Resurrection of a Cylindrical Survivor, includes an expanded fingering chart (which I have further developed since publishing) and the first 40 or so pages of a modal technique method, which I have continued to develop over the years at the abbey. I also did a project graduate recital, on which I premiered two new works for douçaine. Much of the performance was subsequently included on my solo CD, released in January 2010, Douçaine among Friends (Rampur Records SR-118CD). I previously released two CDs with my collaborative group Darkwood Consort (1992-2011, core duo bass clarinet and viola), Tro og Håb Spiller (2003) and Café Musik (2006), both on Rampur Records. My former professional positions include: adjunct professor of woodwinds and chamber music at The College of Idaho and Northwest Nazarene University; douçaine and voice with Virelai des Bois; douçaine and voice with Symphonia Pangaea; bass clarinet with the Boise Philharmonic (1988-2011); bass clarinet with the Sun Valley Summer Symphony (1998-2009), bass clarinet, douçaine and co-director of Darkwood Consort (1992-2011). With Darkwood Consort (collaborative duo with viola/vielle) I toured in Denmark, performed several concerts for the 33rd International Viola Congress in Iceland and performed in Holland to a standing room only audience at the only World Bass Clarinet Conference in history. The duo toured throughout the US and presented its own 4-concert series in Boise and faculty recitals at Northwest Nazarene University and the College of Idaho.
I currently play douçaine on certain liturgies at the abbey (where I am also a cantor) with the lead organist, and new works for douçaine and other instruments with Ensemble Aalto, in residence at the Mount Angel Abbey & Seminary Library. I also occasionally perform with the Eugene, Oregon based ensemble Vox Resonat.
